For the first time in my career, the National Association of Black Journalists is hosting its annual convention in my hometown of Detroit.

And because of that, I’ve decided to pay the registration fee for five NABJ students. I’m doing this because I know what it’s like to be a struggling college student.

I don’t want the cost of attendance to bar someone from visiting my city. Detroit is revitalizing itself in a major way and I want outsiders to see and feel the rebirth of Motor City.

I’ve created a quick and simple online application for any student who wants to apply. You must be a paid NABJ student member who is studying journalism, mass communications, or a related field at an accredited U.S. college or university. When applying, NABJ also asks that you share the e-mail address that you used to become a member. If you don’t use that exact e-mail address, it may be more difficult for NABJ to verify your membership.

I’ll give you guys about six weeks for the applications to roll in. I’ll close the application portal on Friday, April 27th at 5 p.m. EST. After that, I’ll likely pick the five winners on April 30.
