Media Production 201: Reporting and Writing I

The Syllabus: This course is an intensive writing workshop designed to teach the basic elements of news writing and reporting.

Sample Assignment 1: Students had to write a 1,200-word profile feature on an interesting person.

Sample Quiz: Students were given a quiz at the beginning of every class that covered material from the previous week’s reading assignment. The quiz also tested their knowledge of AP style and current events.

Sample Assignment 2: Students interviewed a subject and formatted the story Q&A style.

The Syllabus: In this course, students will learn and practice each step that professional journalists employ to produce a newspaper or magazine.

Sample Assignment 1: Students wrote two, 350-word stories on deadline from a press conference.

Sample Quiz: Students were given a quiz at the beginning of every class that covered material from the previous week’s reading assignment. The quiz also tested their knowledge of AP style.

Sample Assignment 2: Students had to employ their newly learned copy editing skills to find mistakes in a story submitted for publication.

The Syllabus: In this course, students will learn and practice each step that professional journalists employ to produce a newspaper or magazine.

Sample Assignment 1: Students acted as an assignment editor and selected which staff reporter would cover which assignment.

Sample Quiz: Students were given a quiz at the beginning of every class that covered material from the previous week’s reading assignment. The quiz also tested their knowledge of AP style.

Sample Assignment 2: Students were instructed to put together a reporting plan for eight different news scenarios, including finding sources and generating a list of questions to use during an interview.
